Scans & Specialist Referrals

Most musculoskeletal conditions can be successfully managed through a combination of osteopathic treatment, rehabilitation, exercise, and time. However, there are occasions where further investigation or specialist input may be beneficial to help clarify a diagnosis, guide treatment decisions, or explore additional management options.

At Corrective Pain Relief, we work closely with a trusted network of diagnostic imaging providers and musculoskeletal specialists to help patients access the right care at the right time. Whether you require an MRI scan, ultrasound imaging, injection therapy, or specialist assessment, we can help guide you through the next steps.

When Further Investigation May Be Appropriate

While scans can be incredibly useful in certain situations, they are not always necessary. In fact, many common findings on MRI, X-ray, and Ultrasound scans are also found in people who have no pain at all.

However, further investigation may be recommended when:

• Symptoms are severe or worsening

• Recovery is not progressing as expected

• A diagnosis remains unclear following assessment

• Additional information is required to guide treatment decisions

• Symptoms suggest a more complex underlying condition

• Specialist intervention is being considered

Where appropriate, we can arrange referrals for private MRI, Ultrasound, and X-ray imaging to provide greater clarity and confidence in your treatment pathway.

When Specialist Input May Be Appropriate

Most musculoskeletal conditions respond well to conservative treatment; however, some cases benefit from additional specialist assessment and expertise.

Specialist input may be appropriate when:

• Symptoms persist despite appropriate treatment

• Injection therapy is being considered

• Surgical opinions are required

• A condition requires advanced investigation or management

• A diagnosis needs further clarification

• Additional treatment options are being explored

Our role is to help patients understand their options and, where appropriate, coordinate referrals to trusted musculoskeletal specialists, consultants, and healthcare providers.

FROM ASSESSMENT TO THE RIGHT NEXT STEP

Not every musculoskeletal problem follows the same pathway.

For some patients, assessment and conservative treatment may be all that is required. For others, persistent symptoms, clinical findings or lack of expected progress may indicate that further investigation or specialist input should be considered.

1. Assessment

We begin by understanding your symptoms, medical history, activity and goals before carrying out an appropriate clinical and musculoskeletal assessment.

2. Treatment & Rehabilitation

Where conservative management is appropriate, treatment may include osteopathy, manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation and advice.

3. Diagnostic Imaging

If further investigation could provide useful information or influence management, MRI, ultrasound or X-ray may be considered.

4. Specialist Intervention

Where appropriate, findings may lead to specialist assessment or consideration of options such as ultrasound-guided injection therapy.

5. Ongoing Rehabilitation

Where indicated, treatment and rehabilitation can continue following investigation or intervention to support recovery and return to activity.

Patient Experience

★★★★★

“From the first appointment, Adrian took the time to understand the root cause of my symptoms rather than simply treating the pain itself. He explained everything clearly, including what was causing the issue and what could be done to improve it long-term.

After a combination of osteopathic treatment, advice, and tailored exercises, my lower back pain improved significantly. I now have much better mobility, less discomfort, and a far better understanding of how to manage my back health moving forward.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a scan before starting treatment?

Not necessarily. Many musculoskeletal problems can be assessed and managed without diagnostic imaging.

If your clinical history, examination or progress suggests that imaging could provide useful information or influence your management, this can be discussed as part of your care.

→ Explore Diagnostic Imaging Referrals

What happens if osteopathic treatment isn’t helping?

Your progress should be reviewed throughout treatment.

If symptoms aren’t improving as expected, it may be appropriate to reconsider the diagnosis, modify your treatment or rehabilitation plan, arrange further investigation, or consider specialist input.

The aim is not to continue treatment indefinitely when another healthcare pathway may be more appropriate.

Does having a scan mean I’ll need an injection?

No. Having an MRI, ultrasound or X-ray does not automatically mean that injection therapy will be required.

Imaging findings should be considered alongside your symptoms, clinical examination and functional presentation before deciding what happens next.

Can you arrange both diagnostic imaging and injection referrals?

Where clinically appropriate, Corrective Pain Relief can help patients access private diagnostic imaging and onward specialist musculoskeletal assessment through our healthcare referral network.

The healthcare professional providing any specialist procedure will carry out their own assessment and determine whether intervention is appropriate.

Do I need to see my GP first?

Not necessarily.

You can initially book an assessment directly with Corrective Pain Relief. Where further investigation or specialist input appears appropriate, we can discuss the available private referral pathways with you.

Does being referred for an injection mean conservative treatment has failed?

No. Musculoskeletal problems don’t always follow a simple treatment pathway.

For selected conditions, injection therapy may form one part of a wider management strategy alongside appropriate rehabilitation, activity modification and other healthcare input.

What happens after my MRI, ultrasound or X-ray?

Imaging findings should be interpreted within the context of your symptoms and clinical presentation.

Depending on the results, the next step may involve continued conservative treatment and rehabilitation, further investigation or referral for specialist assessment.

Can I return to osteopathy and rehabilitation after an injection?

Potentially, yes.

The appropriate timing depends on the type of injection, the condition being treated and the aftercare advice provided by the clinician responsible for the procedure.

Where appropriate, rehabilitation can then focus on gradually restoring movement, strength and tolerance to activity.

What if my scan shows something abnormal?

An abnormal imaging finding doesn’t necessarily mean that invasive treatment or surgery is required.

Imaging findings need to be considered alongside your symptoms, medical history and clinical examination. Where the findings require further medical or specialist assessment, an appropriate onward referral can be discussed.

What if I’m not sure whether I need treatment, a scan or a specialist?

You don’t need to determine the correct pathway yourself.

An assessment can help establish what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether conservative treatment, diagnostic imaging or further specialist input should be considered.

Not sure what the right next step is?

We can assess your symptoms, discuss what you’ve already tried and help determine an appropriate pathway forward.

You don’t need to make that decision yourself.

Persistent pain doesn’t automatically mean that an injection is necessary. An assessment can help establish what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether continued conservative treatment, diagnostic imaging, specialist assessment or another approach should be considered.
