Osteopathy FAQs | Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting an Osteopath

Whether you’re considering osteopathic treatment for the first time or simply want to understand how osteopathy works, we’ve answered some of the questions patients ask us most frequently.

About Osteopathy

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a regulated healthcare profession that focuses on diagnosing, treating and helping prevent musculoskeletal pain and movement problems. Osteopaths use a combination of hands-on treatment, movement assessment, rehabilitation exercises and patient education to help improve mobility, reduce pain and support long-term recovery.

Treatment is always tailored to the individual and may include joint mobilisation, joint manipulation, soft tissue techniques, dry needling, rehabilitation exercises and lifestyle advice where appropriate.

What does an osteopath do?

An osteopath assesses how your joints, muscles, ligaments, nerves and connective tissues work together. Following a detailed assessment, your osteopath will explain your diagnosis and develop a personalised treatment plan based on your symptoms, goals and lifestyle.

The aim is not simply to reduce pain but to improve movement, restore function and help you return confidently to everyday activities, work or sport.

Your First Appointment

What happens during my first appointment?

Your first appointment begins with a detailed discussion about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and goals. This is followed by a physical examination to assess your posture, movement, strength, flexibility and the structures contributing to your symptoms.

Where appropriate, treatment may begin during the same appointment and could include manual therapy, joint mobilisation, soft tissue techniques, rehabilitation exercises and self-management advice.

Every treatment plan is personalised to your individual needs.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily. Depending on the area being assessed, you may be asked to remove a layer of clothing so your osteopath can carry out an accurate examination.

Shorts are useful for lower limb injuries, while a vest or sports bra may be helpful for shoulder or upper back assessments. Gowns and towels are available where appropriate to help maintain your comfort and privacy.

How long does an appointment take?

A new patient consultation typically lasts around 60 minutes, allowing time for a detailed assessment, diagnosis, treatment and discussion of your rehabilitation plan.

Follow-up appointments are available in 20, 30 or 60-minute sessions, depending on your needs and stage of recovery.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. Most patients can book directly with an osteopath without seeing their GP first.

However, if further medical assessment, diagnostic imaging or specialist input is appropriate, we’ll explain your options and can guide you towards the most suitable healthcare professional.

Treatment & Techniques

Are neck adjustments safe?

Neck adjustments are one of many techniques used by osteopaths and are only considered following a thorough assessment. They are never performed routinely and should only be used when clinically appropriate.

Like any healthcare intervention, treatment should always be based on an individual’s presentation, medical history and informed consent.

Read our evidence-based guide.

→ Are Neck Adjustments Safe?

Do adjustments need to click?

No.

The clicking or popping sound sometimes heard during a joint adjustment is simply the release of gas from within the joint and is not an indicator of whether treatment has been successful.

Many effective osteopathic techniques produce no audible sound at all.

Discover why clicking isn’t the goal of treatment.

→ Do Joint Adjustments Need to Click to Work?

Is osteopathy painful?

Most osteopathic treatment is comfortable, although some techniques may cause temporary discomfort depending on your symptoms and the tissues being treated.

Some people experience mild soreness for 24–48 hours after treatment, similar to what you might feel following exercise. Your osteopath will explain what to expect and adapt treatment to suit your comfort level.

How many treatments will I need?

There is no fixed number of treatments because every patient and every condition is different.

Some people improve after only a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term rehabilitation, particularly where symptoms have been present for some time or involve more complex movement patterns.

Your osteopath will discuss realistic expectations and review your progress throughout your care.
