Injection Therapy Referrals

Most musculoskeletal conditions can be managed successfully through a combination of osteopathic treatment, rehabilitation, exercise, and lifestyle modifications. However, in certain cases, injection therapy may be considered as part of a broader treatment plan to help reduce pain, improve function, and support recovery.

At Corrective Pain Relief, we help patients understand their treatment options and, where clinically appropriate, can arrange referrals to trusted musculoskeletal specialists for assessment and ultrasound-guided injection therapy.

When Might Injection Therapy Be Appropriate?

Injection therapy is not usually the first step in treatment and is often considered when symptoms have not responded as expected to conservative management.

Injection therapy may be appropriate when:

• Pain is limiting day-to-day activities

• Symptoms are preventing rehabilitation progress

• Significant inflammation is present

• Conservative treatment has provided limited improvement

• Additional pain relief is required to support recovery

• Specialist assessment recommends injection-based treatment

Every patient is different, which is why a thorough assessment is essential before considering any injection therapy.

Types of Injection Therapy Available

Corticosteroid (Steroid) Injections

Used to help reduce inflammation and pain in certain joints, tendons, bursae, and soft tissues.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Often used in selected cases of osteoarthritis to improve joint lubrication and movement.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

A regenerative treatment using components of your own blood to support tissue healing.

Hydrodilatation

Commonly used in the management of frozen shoulder to help improve mobility and reduce pain.

Ultrasound-Guided Joint Injections

Performed under ultrasound guidance to improve precision and accuracy.

Tendon & Soft Tissue Injections

May be considered for specific tendon, ligament, or soft tissue conditions following specialist assessment.

Conditions Commonly Referred For Injection Therapy

Depending on clinical suitability, injection therapy may be considered for conditions such as:

• Frozen Shoulder

• Shoulder Bursitis

• Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy

• Tennis Elbow

• Golfer’s Elbow

• Trigger Finger

• Hip Bursitis

• Knee Osteoarthritis

• Plantar Fasciitis

• Achilles Tendinopathy

• Certain spinal and joint conditions

Treatment recommendations are always based on individual assessment and specialist clinical judgement.

What Happens After An Injection?

An injection may help manage symptoms, but it is often only one part of the wider recovery process.

Following an injection, the clinician providing the procedure will advise you about any immediate aftercare, activity restrictions and when it is appropriate to return to normal exercise or rehabilitation.

Once appropriate, ongoing care may focus on addressing the factors that contributed to the original problem and gradually rebuilding movement, strength and confidence.

Depending on your individual needs, this may include:

Exercise Rehabilitation

Gradually restoring strength, mobility and tolerance to activity.

Osteopathic Treatment

Hands-on treatment may be reintroduced where appropriate and according to the advice provided following your procedure.

Load Management

Helping you return progressively to work, sport, training and everyday activity.

Ongoing Assessment

Monitoring your response and adapting rehabilitation according to your progress.

The aim isn’t simply to reduce symptoms temporarily, but to use the opportunity created by appropriate intervention to support a more complete return to function.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral for injection therapy?

Not necessarily. Where injection therapy may be appropriate, Corrective Pain Relief can help refer you for specialist musculoskeletal assessment through our healthcare network.

The clinician providing the injection will complete their own assessment and determine whether the procedure is appropriate for you.

Can an osteopath refer me for an injection?

Yes. Where clinically appropriate, we can refer patients to an appropriate healthcare professional for further assessment and consideration of musculoskeletal injection therapy.

A referral does not automatically mean an injection will be performed. The final decision is made by the clinician responsible for the procedure following their assessment.

What types of injection therapy are available?

Depending on your condition and specialist assessment, options may include:

  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Hyaluronic acid injections
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections
  • Hydrodilatation
  • Other ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal injections

The most appropriate option depends on the condition being treated, your medical history and the specialist’s assessment.

Are injections ultrasound-guided?

Many musculoskeletal injections can be performed using ultrasound guidance, allowing the clinician to visualise the relevant anatomical structures and guide placement of the injection.

Whether ultrasound guidance is required depends on the procedure and area being treated.

Do I need an MRI or ultrasound before having an injection?

Not always.

Whether imaging is required depends on your symptoms, clinical assessment, diagnosis and the type of procedure being considered.

If further investigation would be useful before specialist assessment, this can be discussed and appropriate diagnostic imaging arranged.

Can I have osteopathic treatment after an injection?

Potentially, yes.

The timing and type of treatment will depend on the procedure performed, the condition being treated and the aftercare guidance provided by the clinician responsible for your injection.

Once appropriate, osteopathic treatment and exercise rehabilitation may form part of your wider recovery plan.

Are injections a permanent cure?

Not necessarily. Injection therapy may be used to help manage symptoms or create an opportunity for rehabilitation, depending on the condition and type of injection.

It is important to consider why the problem developed and what may be needed afterwards. For some patients, this can include strengthening, mobility work, load management and gradual return to activity.

What’s the difference between corticosteroid, PRP and hyaluronic acid injections?

They are different interventions with different potential indications.

Corticosteroid injections are used in selected conditions to help manage pain and inflammation.

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) uses a preparation derived from the patient’s own blood and is used in some musculoskeletal conditions.

Hyaluronic acid injections are most commonly considered for certain joint problems, particularly osteoarthritis.

Which, if any, is appropriate should be determined following specialist assessment rather than choosing an injection based on symptoms alone.

What is hydrodilatation?

Hydrodilatation is a procedure most commonly associated with frozen shoulder. Fluid is introduced into the shoulder joint under image guidance with the aim of helping improve pain and movement.

Whether it is appropriate depends on the diagnosis and specialist assessment.

How quickly can I return to exercise after an injection?

This depends on the type of injection, area treated and reason for the procedure.

The clinician performing your injection will provide specific aftercare advice, including when you can return to work, exercise and sport.

Where rehabilitation is appropriate, activity can then be gradually progressed according to your response and the advice provided.

How do I know whether I need an injection?

You don’t need to make that decision yourself.

Persistent pain doesn’t automatically mean that an injection is necessary. An assessment can help establish what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether continued conservative treatment, diagnostic imaging, specialist assessment or another approach should be considered.

Not sure whether injection therapy is the right next step?

We can assess your symptoms, discuss what you’ve already tried and help determine whether further investigation or specialist input may be appropriate.
