Diagnostic Imaging Referrals

Most musculoskeletal conditions can be diagnosed through a detailed case history and physical examination. However, there are occasions where diagnostic imaging can provide additional information to help confirm a diagnosis, guide treatment decisions, or rule out more serious underlying conditions.

At Corrective Pain Relief, we can arrange referrals for private MRI, Ultrasound, and X-ray imaging when clinically appropriate. Our aim is to ensure patients receive the right investigation at the right time, helping to provide clarity, confidence, and a more effective treatment plan.

When Is Imaging Appropriate?

While scans can be incredibly valuable, they are not always necessary. In many cases, symptoms can be effectively assessed and managed without imaging.

However, diagnostic imaging may be recommended when:

• Symptoms are severe, persistent, or worsening

• Recovery is not progressing as expected

• A diagnosis remains unclear

• Significant injury or structural damage is suspected

• Further information is required to guide treatment decisions

• Specialist intervention or surgical opinion is being considered

The decision to refer for imaging is always based on clinical findings, symptoms, and individual circumstances.

What Happens After Your Scan?

A scan is only one part of the diagnostic process.

Imaging findings should always be considered alongside your symptoms, medical history, and physical examination. Many scan findings are common in people who have no pain at all, which is why interpretation and clinical context are so important.

Following your scan, we can review the results with you, explain what the findings mean, and discuss the most appropriate next steps. This may include osteopathic treatment, rehabilitation, specialist referral, injection therapy referral, or ongoing self-management strategies.

Our goal is to use imaging to provide clarity and confidence, helping you make informed decisions about your recovery.

Clinical assessment comes first. Diagnostic imaging may be recommended where the findings could help clarify a diagnosis or influence the next stage of your care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral for a private MRI, ultrasound or X-ray?

Not necessarily. Where diagnostic imaging is clinically appropriate, Corrective Pain Relief can help arrange a private referral through our diagnostic imaging network without you necessarily needing to return to your GP first.

Can an osteopath refer me for an MRI scan?

Yes. Where clinically appropriate, a registered osteopath can refer patients for certain forms of private diagnostic imaging through participating imaging providers.

At Corrective Pain Relief, the decision to refer is based on your clinical history, assessment and whether imaging is likely to provide useful information for your ongoing care.

Do I need a scan before seeing an osteopath?

Usually not. Many musculoskeletal problems can be assessed and managed without diagnostic imaging.

If your history or examination suggests that imaging could help clarify the problem, rule out certain conditions or influence your management, this can be discussed during your appointment.

What’s the difference between MRI, ultrasound and X-ray?

Each type of imaging is useful for different purposes.

MRI provides detailed images of many soft tissues and structures including discs, nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints.

Diagnostic ultrasound is particularly useful for assessing certain superficial soft tissues, including tendons, muscles and some joint-related problems, and allows structures to be viewed dynamically.

X-ray is particularly useful for assessing bones and certain joint changes.

The appropriate investigation depends on your symptoms and clinical presentation.

How quickly can I get a private scan?

Appointment availability varies according to the type of scan, location and imaging provider. Private imaging can often provide significantly quicker access than waiting for non-urgent investigations through other pathways.

Where imaging is appropriate, we’ll explain the referral process and available options.

What happens when I receive my scan results?

Your imaging findings should be considered alongside your symptoms and clinical assessment rather than interpreted in isolation.

Depending on the findings, your next step may involve osteopathic treatment, exercise rehabilitation, further investigation or referral to another healthcare professional or specialist.

Can you refer me for further treatment if my scan identifies a problem?

Yes. Where appropriate, we can help guide you towards further healthcare input.

This may include specialist assessment, injection therapy or other healthcare services, depending on your imaging findings, symptoms and clinical needs.

Does having an abnormal MRI mean I need surgery?

No. Imaging findings don’t automatically determine treatment.

Changes can sometimes appear on scans without being responsible for a person’s symptoms, which is why imaging needs to be interpreted alongside your clinical history, examination and functional presentation.

Where specialist or surgical assessment appears appropriate, this can be discussed as part of your onward referral options.

Not sure whether you need diagnostic imaging?

You don’t need to decide which scan you need before your appointment. A clinical assessment can help determine whether imaging is appropriate and, if so, which type of investigation may provide the most useful information.

Not Sure Whether You Need a Scan?

Pain or persistent symptoms don’t automatically mean that you need an MRI, ultrasound or X-ray.

At Corrective Pain Relief, we can assess your symptoms, clinical history and movement to help determine whether diagnostic imaging may provide useful information, or whether treatment and rehabilitation may be appropriate without further investigation.

Where imaging is clinically indicated, we can help guide you through the appropriate referral pathway and support you in understanding the next steps once your results are available.
