Stiffness where the neck meets the upper back is one of the most common issues seen in clinical practice. Whether caused by prolonged sitting, desk work, driving, stress or poor posture, restrictions in this area can contribute to neck tension, upper back discomfort, reduced mobility and increased strain on surrounding muscles.
The region where the neck meets the upper back is known as the cervicothoracic junction, often referred to as the CT junction. Because this area acts as a transition point between the highly mobile neck and the more stable thoracic spine, it is particularly susceptible to becoming restricted over time.
When movement becomes limited, the body will often compensate elsewhere, which can contribute to stiffness, muscular tension and altered movement patterns.
In the video below, Adrian Lee, Registered Osteopath and founder of Corrective Pain Relief Manchester, demonstrates gentle osteopathic techniques used to improve movement through the CT junction and surrounding structures, while also introducing a sternal pump technique designed to support movement within the lymphatic system.
